Shai’s Mum’s Chicken Bhuna With Potatoes

Chicken Bhuna with Potatoes


1/2 cup cooking oil

1 cinnamon stick

2 green cardamoms

1 black cardamoms

1 tsp cumin seeds

3 onions finely sliced

200 g chopped tomatoes

1 tbsp ginger garlic paste

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp chilli powder

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1 tsp coriander powder

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp Pakistani Basaar

1tsp Kashmiri chilli powder

1/2 tsp paprika

1 tbsp yoghurt

3 potatoes chopped in to bite size pieces

1/2 kg chicken

1 tsp kasuri methi

Fresh coriander for garnish


Heat the oil add the whole spices and let sizzle.

Add the onions and lightly brown approximately 10-15 minutes.

Add the ginger garlic and stir a minute

Add the chopped tomatoes and stir well

Add salt to taste

After 5 minutes add the spices mix well

Add 1 tbsp yoghurt and cook it out until the yoghurt has evaporated

Add the chicken pieces and potatoes together mix well add splashes of water up to 1/2 a cup and keep stirring.

Add 1 tsp Kasuri Methi - crush it in your palm and drop it in

Keep cooking adding splashes of water as and when required until almost cooked sprinkle garam masala on top

Garnish with fresh coriander

Enjoy with chappatis
